Nuts are internally threaded fasteners that are designed to pair with bolts, screws, studs, or some other externally threaded component. The internal threads of the nut mate with the external threads of the bolt, creating friction between the opposing threads and tension in the externally threaded component, thereby introducing clamping force between the fastening units.  For this reason, it is a solid union with substantial holding force.  There are hundreds of types of nut styles, depending on an applications design, objective, requirements, and limitations.  Of course, the most common style of nut found worldwide is the hex (6-sided) nut.
