Structural and Heavy Hex Nuts are wider and thicker than standard Finished Hex Nuts.  They are used with mating Structural or Heavy Hex Bolts.  Because of their greater length of thread engagement, these are the strongest of all comparably-graded nuts.  They also offer the greatest resistance to nut dilation, a widening or stretching of the minor diameter of the nut, reducing the effective shear area of both the internal and external threads, thus weakening the entire joint and leading to loosening and eventual failure.  Structural and Heavy Hex Nuts are available in a number of materials, grades and coatings.
