Applications of Different Types of Springs
The type of spring needed in a particular application is dependent upon a variety of factors, including amount of load, clearance, deflection (travel distance), and initial tension.- Flat Springs utilize torque tension in order to store and release energy. Electronics, defense, aerospace and industrial markets benefit from the advantages offered by Flat Springs.
- Coiled (Compression) Springs are the most common type of resistance spring available, and are widely found in transportation, aerospace, medical, industrial and electronic industries.
- Wave Springs (Wave Washers, Belleville Washers) provide solutions for high load compression in a small space. They may be used in a variety of configurations, including as singles, multiples stacked in parallel to achieve increased load, or multiples stacked in opposition to achieve increased deflection.
- Extension Springs are designed to absorb energy, store energy, and create resistance to a pulling force. They are attached at both ends to other components, and when these components move apart, the extension spring tension pulls them back together again.
- Torsion Springs are helical springs that exert a torque or rotationally applied force. They can store and release angular energy or statically hold a mechanism in place by deflecting the legs about the body centerline axis.
