Hanger bolts are, in fact, double-ended studs.  They have lag screw threads on one end and machine screw threads on the other.  The lag screw end is drilled into wood, and the machine screw end is used for attaching a nut or some other internally threaded component.  Coupling nuts and threaded rod are commonly utilized in conjunction with Hanger Bolts to suspend electrical conduit, junction boxes, lighting fixtures, or HVAC components.
